Alberto Giacometti
The Graphic Works – Gross Collection

Giacometti’s line is born entirely from the moment—and each sheet reproduced through printmaking is without correction: the artist casts his lines directly onto the surface, chisels a face out of the white of a sheet, or launches almost impatiently into the inventory of his Paris studio. It is as if the act of drawing were struggling for the key to how Alberto Giacometti arrived at the figure in the first place. The artist moves unsecured along that boundary where body and space merge.

Alberto Giacometti’s graphic works are far less well known than his bronze busts and standing figures. Yet he repeatedly engaged in printmaking experiments and collaborated with writers and publishers. With the collection of restaurateur and hotelier Carlos Gross (1953–2023), a cross-section of Alberto Giacometti’s entire body of graphic works is now on view in Basel for the first time. The Gross Collection invites viewers to take part in the adventure of drawing. It inaugurates a series of exhibitions dedicated on the one hand to the collection and on the other to drawing.
