The Project

Chance as a principle of design* – 12 colours – 137 cultural proponents were randomly selected by Gerald Laing and Peter Phillips to name their favourite colours**.

On average, the top 12 were as follows: red, blue, white, orange, black, silver, light blue, green, violet, dark red, yellowy-orange and transparent green.

Selection – These 12 colours were assigned numbers and fed into a computer by Littmann. The computer then distributed the 12 colours randomly among the 400 square fields. Finally, Littman selected one of the countless colour combinations at random for the first intervention.
