The project takes place in a former bank building on Rittergasse in Basel, currently used temporarily by FOR ART. Twenty rooms will become the setting for an interdisciplinary concert performance. The central reference for this project is the tombeau – a musical genre from the 16th to 18th centuries dedicated to the memory of the deceased. A main focus is on rooms in the basement, the former vault rooms and rather inaccessible places that allow for intimate listening situations. The aim is to critically reflect on a state between two deaths (1), between capital and exhaustion, between growth and stagnation, between survival and meritocracy. 30 students from scenography (HGK Basel), Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the master programme in Music and Scene in Transformation at the Basel Academy of Music FHNW are collaborating on this project. The audience is invited to move freely in the building and experience spaces of transition, uncertainty, in-between-ness, exhaustion and transformation.
The project was initiated and supervised by Andreas Wenger, Martina Ehleiter, Raphael Sbrzesny, Johannes Keller, Martina Papiro, Deda Colonna, Michael Kleine and Ellen Blumenstein.
