Exhibition Talk: Inventory Illustrators – a female profession

Who were the women behind the inventory drawings? And why is their work still relevant today? In conversation with Rahel Wille, the historical practice of inventory drawing comes vividly to life. Taking the exhibition "Inventory Illustrators – a female profession" as its starting point, the evening invites exchange and discussion around visibility, knowledge, and the history of collecting.

150 historical inventory drawings are being shown outside Hamburg for the first time. They tell the story of the precise, often invisible work of women illustrators who, from the early 20th century onward, documented objects from all over the world. The exhibition shifts the focus to women whose work has lastingly shaped our understanding of the world. Who would have thought inventory drawings could be so fascinating?

A moderated conversation with Rahel Wille – Curator of the Ethnographic Collection at the Bern Historical Museum and former curator of the exhibition “Ausgezeichnet! Künstlerinnen des Inventars” at MARKK Hamburg (2019). An opportunity to learn more about this important historical practice and its impact – through direct exchange and on site in Basel.
