FOR ART is dedicating Basel’s first comprehensive exhibition to Peter Wirz (1915–2000). “I drew in a futurist-symbolic style,” the artist wrote about himself, “combined with decorations of my own system and mystical.” In defiance of a life marked by exclusion, humiliation, and misunderstanding, the assistant gardener and psychiatric patient invented a world of his own. Heraldic signs and typographic inventions speak of dignity and power. Churches resemble closed institutions, and scenes of violence may echo the biographical drama of a creator for whom little mattered as much as drawing and writing.
