Fascination and Resource

Münsterplatz, Basel
Sand is the basis for bridges, roads, buildings and solar installations, for microchips, toothpaste and cosmetics. The amount extracted each year is several times greater than the amount that natural erosion can produce worldwide when rivers are at normal water levels.
The block of pure, compacted sand on Münsterplatz corresponds to the volume required for the multi-storey commercial building on the corner of Kohlenberg and Barfüsserplatz. The elements will help shape the sculptural giant and may eventually cause it to collapse. The installation precedes the exhibition, which opens at Rittergasse 25 in early December and also explores sand as an artistic material.

Jean Cocteau – Drawings

FOR ART, Rittergasse 25, Basel
His line is tender, critical, impetuous. And it has never been seen like this in Basel before. Portraits of his companions transport us to the Parisian avant-garde of the 1920s. The homoerotic gaze draws us towards the most intimate of portraits and into the autobiographically inspired Livre Blanc (1928). Hallucinatory and immediate, opium withdrawal fuels the self-staging of the vulnerable artist Jean Cocteau (1889–1963). Letters, books and posters trace connections within a network that made cultural history through literature, opera, dance and film.
